Kingdom Fungi – Artistic Project in Ghana
The Kingdom Fungi project is an artistic journey and exploration of nature as a network of connections between organisms, people and cultures. Our goal is to observe and creatively interpret the places we visit and to capture the hidden relationships that exist in nature.
During our stay in Ghana we visit various natural areas and parks, including Kakum National Park, observing local vegetation, fungi, insects, birds and lizards. These encounters with the tropical ecosystem become an important source of inspiration for the artworks being created.
The sculptures and installations created by Marta Mulawa are not separate, independent objects. The entire exhibition is conceived as one coherent story about relationships in nature – similar to the world of mycelium, where individual elements form a single interconnected network of life.
Each element of the exhibition is part of a larger whole. The forms are inspired by natural structures: fungi, plants, animal movements and the energy of the Ghanaian landscape. In this way, the exhibition becomes an artistic interpretation of the place where the works are created.
All artworks are produced during our stay in Ghana and after the exhibition they will be donated to the collection of the National Museum of Ghana, as a gesture of gratitude for the opportunity to work in this country and for the collaboration with local institutions.
We hope that the Kingdom Fungi project will become a symbolic bridge between contemporary art, nature and the culture of Ghana.
An important co-creator of the exhibition is also Wojciech Zaremba, whose large-format photographs of Ghana’s natural landscapes form an integral part of the installation. His images are not merely a background for the exhibition – they create a visual environment that surrounds the sculptures and allows the viewer to immerse themselves in the atmosphere of the forest, bush and tropical nature.
The photographs reveal the majesty and scale of Ghana’s landscapes, capturing their light, structure and unique atmosphere. Through these images the viewer can experience the presence of the place that inspires the entire concept of the project.
In this way, the photographs of Wojciech Zaremba become an inseparable part of one unified installation – an artistic narrative about nature that connects sculpture, image and space into a single whole.
